VII. Group Therapy

**Date:** January 4, 1930
**Location:** Belding Town Asylum
**Facilitator:** Dr. Eleanor Wraith, PhD in Medieval Studies and Psychology
**Participants:** Sir Cedric the Brave, Lady Elowen of the Vale, Sir Thaddeus the Unyielding, Dame Isolde the Wise

---

#### **Session Overview:**

The group therapy session commenced at 10:00 AM in the common room, adorned with medieval tapestries that seem to mock the participants’ former glories. The atmosphere was charged with a peculiar mix of camaraderie and underlying tension, as the knights shared their experiences of life after battle amidst the chaotic environment of the asylum.

#### **Objectives:**

1. To provide a safe space for retired knights to express their feelings and experiences.
2. To foster a sense of community among participants who feel isolated from society.
3. To explore coping mechanisms for dealing with trauma and loss of purpose.

---

#### **Participants’ Presentations:**

- **Sir Cedric the Brave:**
  - **Background:** Former commander known for his valor in numerous battles.
  - **Discussion Points:** Expressed feelings of disillusionment regarding his past glory. He articulated a deep sense of loss over his identity as a knight. Notably, he shared an incident where he confronted a delusional staff member who insisted he was merely a "man in a costume."
  - **Coping Mechanisms:** Suggested forming a “Knights’ Code” to remind themselves of their values and virtues.

- **Lady Elowen of the Vale:**
  - **Background:** A skilled archer and strategist who fought valiantly in defense of her homeland.
  - **Discussion Points:** Discussed her struggles with PTSD from witnessing comrades fall in battle. She expressed frustration at the asylum staff’s erratic behavior, noting that they often seemed more disturbed than the patients themselves.
  - **Coping Mechanisms:** Recommended mindfulness exercises and storytelling sessions to share their legacies.

- **Sir Thaddeus the Unyielding:**
  - **Background:** Known for his unwavering loyalty and strength on the battlefield.
  - **Discussion Points:** Shared his anger towards the villagers of Belding Town who once celebrated him but now view him as a madman. He recounted an encounter where villagers threatened him with pitchforks, reinforcing his feeling of betrayal by those he once protected.
  - **Coping Mechanisms:** Proposed physical activities like sword training (with foam swords) to channel aggression positively.

- **Dame Isolde the Wise:**
  - **Background:** A healer and advisor to kings, renowned for her wisdom.
  - **Discussion Points:** Offered insights on mental health and resilience. She pointed out that while they are labeled as “insane,” it is society that has lost its way. Her calm demeanor provided a grounding influence during heated discussions.
  - **Coping Mechanisms:** Suggested journaling as a means to process emotions and reflect on their journeys.

---

#### **Group Dynamics:**

The group displayed strong cohesion despite their individual traumas. They often rallied around each other during moments of vulnerability, creating an environment where sharing became easier. However, there were moments of tension when discussing interactions with asylum staff, revealing underlying frustrations about being misunderstood.

#### **Observations:**

- The knights exhibited remarkable insight into their situations, indicating high levels of self-awareness.
- There were instances where humor was used as a coping mechanism, particularly when discussing absurd encounters with staff.
- A recurring theme emerged around reclaiming their identities outside of warfare; many expressed a desire to redefine what it means to be a knight in this new context.

---

#### **Conclusion & Recommendations:**

The session concluded with a collective agreement to meet weekly, emphasizing the importance of maintaining their bond as they navigate life in the asylum.

**Next Steps:**
1. Implement regular storytelling sessions to honor their pasts and foster connection.
2. Introduce art therapy focused on creating shields or banners representing their personal journeys.
3. Schedule individual check-ins with each knight to further explore personal challenges.

**Facilitator’s Note:** The knights are remarkably resilient individuals whose insights challenge conventional notions of sanity within this institution. Their ability to support one another amidst chaos is commendable and should be nurtured further in subsequent sessions.

Axiom vs. Citadel: The Belding War.

The Belding Redskin Veterans Memorial, a Pre-Axiomatic Relic, stands as an Archaic Assemblage where the former mascot name remains consciously inscribed. This granite structure serves as a primary Territorializing Machine within the community's molecular space, refusing the Molar Aggregation of the rebranded school identity. Its inscription is the deployment of a Local Irregular Force, mapping the veterans' intimate relationships as a localized State Apparatus exercising Granular Sovereignty. The memorial is a Theater of Operations, a Palimpsest-Machine where the old name persists as a battlefield where the comfort of a unified memory is perpetually challenged. The entire memorial operates as a Desiring-Machine that simultaneously channels the schizophrenic flows of Pride-Fixation and Guilt-Discharge. This multiplicity of names, spanning generations of martial service, form...

A Shelter Dog’s Journey with a Wounded Veteran

There’s a thing people say about being rescued: sometimes, it works both ways. I should know—my paws have paced many a cold shelter floor here in Michigan, looking for a way out. But on that sticky July afternoon, when a man named James Burchfield from Animal Overwatch peered through my kennel door, I sensed a shift. We were both veterans, in our own battered way. This is my story, curled up at the intersection of brokenness and hope, written with wet-nosed honesty and a dash of canine psychology. Two Broken Souls, One First Sniff (Our Mission) The day James walked into the shelter, I noticed him right away. He didn’t move like the others—no quick steps, no loud greetings. He was quiet, almost cautious, like he was carrying something heavy inside. I’ve seen a lot of people come and go, but James felt different. There was hope in his eyes, but also something els...

Veteran Voices and the Mascot Debate: Belding's Redskins Memorial vs. Saranac's Crossroads

When Belding Area Schools retired the Redskins mascot, it marked not just a change in logos or team names, but a cultural and emotional pivot point for many—especially local veterans who still hold strong ties to the old identity. This led to a unique act of remembrance: the Belding veteran community erected a 'Redskins' veteran memorial in the town’s veterans park, blending respect for military service with a controversial symbol. Now, the question begs—will Saranac’s veteran community follow suit? As I dove into this story, I realized it’s far more than a sports debate; it’s a clash of values, memory, and identity. Belding’s Mascot Change: A Veteran Community’s Complex Tribute As I’ve reported on the evolving mascot debate in Ionia County, Belding’s journey stands out for its complexity and the deep ties between the school’s identity and its veteran co...
