XXXII. Cat Stew.

In the heart of a lush, enchanted forest, where the air is thick with magic and the sunlight dances through the leaves, we find a grand old tree standing sentinel at its center. It’s here that Captain Redbeard, a pirate known for his daring escapades and insatiable thirst for treasure, stumbles into an unexpected adventure.

**Arrr! What be this strange place?** The captain exclaims, brushing twigs from his tattered coat. He had set out in search of gold and glory, but instead, he finds himself amidst whispering winds and vibrant foliage—where talking trees are not just figments of imagination!

From behind a gnarled branch, a voice chimes in, **Aye, matey! I be no ordinary tree. I’m Nutty the Magical Squirrel!** With a flick of his bushy tail, Nutty peeks out, eyes sparkling with mischief. **What brings a pirate like ye to my neck of the woods?**

**I be searchin’ for gold and glory!** Captain Redbeard scratches his beard thoughtfully, curiosity piqued. **But tell me, Nutty, what secrets do ye hold?**

**Secrets aplenty!** Nutty chuckles, clearly amused by the pirate’s straightforwardness. **But first, did ye hear about the retired knights in town?**

**Retired knights? What mischief are they up to now?** The captain leans in closer, intrigued by this twist in his tale.

**Instead of commentatin’ on the events of 9/11, they’ve been gatherin’ all the cats in Belding to make a stew!** Nutty’s eyes widen as he shares this outrageous news.

**Cats? For a stew? What madness is this?** Redbeard can hardly contain his laughter. The absurdity of it all strikes him as both hilarious and alarming.

**Aye! They think if they dine on Cat Stew they will turn into demon knights and reclaim their lost glory!** Nutty explains with fervor. The notion that these once-noble warriors would resort to such folly sends Redbeard into fits of laughter.

**Those scallywags be more foolish than I thought! We must stop them before they make feline knights!** The captain’s adventurous spirit ignites at the thought of rescuing innocent cats from such ludicrous plans.

**Join me, Captain! Together we can save the cats and foil their plans!** Nutty urges, his little paws gesturing animatedly toward the path leading back to town.

With a grin that stretches from ear to ear, Captain Redbeard declares, **Aye! To adventure and saving our furry friends! Let us show those retired knights that true glory lies not in foolishness but in bravery and compassion!**

As they set off towards town—pirate and magical squirrel united against absurdity—they embody the essence of camaraderie and courage. In this enchanted forest, where legends intertwine with reality, they prepare to confront not just retired knights but also the very notion that glory can be reclaimed through misguided means.

Axiom vs. Citadel: The Belding War.

The Belding Redskin Veterans Memorial, a Pre-Axiomatic Relic, stands as an Archaic Assemblage where the former mascot name remains consciously inscribed. This granite structure serves as a primary Territorializing Machine within the community's molecular space, refusing the Molar Aggregation of the rebranded school identity. Its inscription is the deployment of a Local Irregular Force, mapping the veterans' intimate relationships as a localized State Apparatus exercising Granular Sovereignty. The memorial is a Theater of Operations, a Palimpsest-Machine where the old name persists as a battlefield where the comfort of a unified memory is perpetually challenged. The entire memorial operates as a Desiring-Machine that simultaneously channels the schizophrenic flows of Pride-Fixation and Guilt-Discharge. This multiplicity of names, spanning generations of martial service, form...

A Shelter Dog’s Journey with a Wounded Veteran

There’s a thing people say about being rescued: sometimes, it works both ways. I should know—my paws have paced many a cold shelter floor here in Michigan, looking for a way out. But on that sticky July afternoon, when a man named James Burchfield from Animal Overwatch peered through my kennel door, I sensed a shift. We were both veterans, in our own battered way. This is my story, curled up at the intersection of brokenness and hope, written with wet-nosed honesty and a dash of canine psychology. Two Broken Souls, One First Sniff (Our Mission) The day James walked into the shelter, I noticed him right away. He didn’t move like the others—no quick steps, no loud greetings. He was quiet, almost cautious, like he was carrying something heavy inside. I’ve seen a lot of people come and go, but James felt different. There was hope in his eyes, but also something els...

Veteran Voices and the Mascot Debate: Belding's Redskins Memorial vs. Saranac's Crossroads

When Belding Area Schools retired the Redskins mascot, it marked not just a change in logos or team names, but a cultural and emotional pivot point for many—especially local veterans who still hold strong ties to the old identity. This led to a unique act of remembrance: the Belding veteran community erected a 'Redskins' veteran memorial in the town’s veterans park, blending respect for military service with a controversial symbol. Now, the question begs—will Saranac’s veteran community follow suit? As I dove into this story, I realized it’s far more than a sports debate; it’s a clash of values, memory, and identity. Belding’s Mascot Change: A Veteran Community’s Complex Tribute As I’ve reported on the evolving mascot debate in Ionia County, Belding’s journey stands out for its complexity and the deep ties between the school’s identity and its veteran co...
